Specializes in ltc med surg hospice. Every now and then i have a shift where my patients are stable and relatively easy but those are few and far between in my unit. Nurses and other care practitioners in the medical surgical field are widely trained across a variety of diseases and illnesses after all they deal with all sorts of conditions that require hospitalizations including recovery from. Complex and challenging intensive care icu or critical care nursing requires an advanced technical skill set a calm manner and a postive life philosophy.

The main difference between an icu and a regular hospital floor also sometimes known as medical surgical is the level of care provided. Although it seems rather obvious that the patients in the intensive care unit require more intense care it isn t until you ve actually experienced that intensity that you realise how stressful it can be. Has 7 years experience. When icu nurses float to my floor they always tell me how glad they are to be in the icu.

You may be too unstable to be treated on a regular nursing floor or icu level monitoring may be the protocol for a particular procedure. Icu nursing can be as hectic as floor nursing but in a different way. Icu nurses provide care for life threatening medical conditions and injuries and may work with patients from the neonatal ward to seniors. Many floor nurses understand the intensity and stress of a code but that doesn t match the constant stress of the icu.

They would trade whatever 3 4pts they have on my floor for one patient with 5 drips and other time consuming things they have. One critically ill patient can keep you running nonstop for hours.
