Install Floating Floor Trim

Finish the molding to match the trim not the flooring.

Install floating floor trim.

Replace the baseboard by nailing it to the wall not the flooring. Ideally this includes baseboards base shoe moldings and case moldings around doors. Be careful not to pin the flooring down in the process. Flooring 101 home waterproof flooring tips avoid these transition install mistakes.

Using a table saw rip the boards for the first row to remove the tongue. Then cut a piece of transition to fit between the doorjambs. Trim the doorstops on either side of the doorway to the height of the transition molding. Often removing doors from their hinges helps with installation too.

When installation is complete remove the spacers and roll the entire floor in both directions using a 75 pound or 100 pound floor roller. Installing the floating floor 1 roll out the foam underlayment in a single layer across the floor. For the border trim the planks to fit and press into place while leaving appropriate expansion room as you did with the first row. Once your flooring is down install shoe molding to cover the expansion gap between the flooring and the base trim.

Install first row of flooring use small sections of planks as spacers to hold the flooring away from the wall about 1 4 inch image 1. For step installations where the floating floor is glued down to the existing treads flush stair nosing if available can be used. Installing a floating floor to a flush transition molding can potentially lead to buckling end joint peaking and squeaks later on. Set the transition on the subfloor.

Shoot 1 1 4 inch finish nails through the shoe and into the base trim. These pieces complete the flooring project by covering unsightly edges and gaps hiding joints left for expansion and contraction and bridging areas where one floor covering ends and another one begins. Slide the first two rows into their final position and repeat steps 5 and 6 above using the same alternating plank technique to complete the process. Remove the trim.

For ease of installation it is always best to remove the trim that makes contact with the floor. The spacers will allow for natural expansion to occur around the perimeter of the floor after installation. In fact laminate flooring can be installed in almost every room in your home including kitchens since it doesn t have to be glued down and doesn t involve grout or mortar. Flooring trim and moldings are both functional and decorative whether you are installing a luxury vinyl or engineered tile floor.

Planks can be cut with a hand saw circular saw or flooring cutter and most laminate flooring comes in planks that simply snap together with a tongue. Most diyers can complete laminate floor installation in one day.
