Install Interior Doors Before Flooring

Theres one good reason to install the doors first and that is if your floor is not level across the threshold almost always off by some factor in my house.

Install interior doors before flooring.

If you re installing a pre hung door make sure you get the correct swing determined by the placement of the hinges and doorknob. If the knob is to the right select a right handed door. You can just lay the door flat on the ground and open it to check to see if this was done at the factory. Open the door and stand with your back to the hinges.

First floor i need to put 3 4 plywood subfloor and vapor barrier to the concrete slab floor base. Spruce wrote i d vote for doors first it will make installation of the door easier by not having to worry about floor clearances once installed when you re doing the floor you then cut the jamb legs so that they just clear the flooring and any padding glue etc. That may be installed along with it. On a professional job all the doors are hung first then cased.

Do i do the door casements before or after i paint the walls. This is for timing. Interior doors are a great way to update and accent your decor without too much commitment or expense. Before the floors go in you can easily shim one end of the jamb to get the door exactly plumb.

Baseboard goes down then the 2nd coat of paint goes on. The floor coverers will pop the hinge pins and set the doors aside while installing their floor covering. Much easier to install the flooring no trimming of the doors needed no fitting around cabinets etc. Then the flooring installers come in and do their thing.

I think builders opt for floors last to minimize damage from the various trades moving through the house. This seals the wood so the door doesn t warp over time. No finished floors yet. Before the door is installed make sure the top and bottom of the door are painted.

We built our own house a couple of years ago and we installed our hardwood and tile floors before installing the door frames and cabinets. Not all of them do. If the doorknob is on the left you need a left handed door. By having all the doors and trim up first the painters can come in and spray everything out and get the first coat of color on the walls.

Before i do the floors i suppose. Generally speaking door frames are installed and the doors are hung during the trim and finish phase before the flooring is installed but after the painting. Second floor just needs the finished hardwood floors. Installing a pre hung door is easier and faster than starting from scratch since most of the more labor intensive work is already done.
